Oils are painted from dark to light. It’s important to establish an under-painting containing the overall temperature of a piece. Once this is established, the composition is laid in on the toned canvas. The remainder of the piece will be painted completely over again on top of these under layers and they will subtly show through and unify the colors to come. This serves to lend an air of morning light as a back ground glow.
